Assignment 4, Tobias Cox - A world in pictures
This picture, taken by Bill Hudson, an award winning associated press photographer, was taken in the midst of the fight for African American civil rights. It pictures a young black man being bitten by a police dog, as the police just stand by and let it happen. You can see in the young man's face how he has sort of given up or surrendered. The day after it was taken in Birmingham, Alabama, it was circulated on all sorts of news prints all through America. It really looked as if it showed intense police brutality, and really contributed to the civil rights movement in that way. However, the full story of what is going on is unknown. It is not known whether the young man in the picture is looking down because he has surrendered, or if he is looking at the dog. Regardless, it evoked much emotional thoughts in the Americans that saw it.
