Assignment 7 - Grace Bond

On Saturday, October 3, 1863, Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday of every November as Thanksgiving day in the United States of America. Although the typical story paired with this holiday happened hundreds of years before, it took this long for the country to nationally recognize the holiday. Nowadays, this holiday is celebrated in several different ways. There is always lots of football on, people eating turkey, and family gatherings. This holiday started off as something so different to the world that Abraham Lincoln was a part of. Today, Thanksgiving day just runs into the holiday season of Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc. People are more excited about going Black Friday shopping that night and the next day than truly being thankful for everything around them, as the holiday encourages.  This holiday is so important to America and without Abraham Lincoln declaring a national holiday, who knows where we will be now.
