Something I am always pondering on is why the Electoral College still runs the way it runs. It may of made sense back in the 18th century when it was first established, and it also made sense in the early 19th century when it was last changed significantly. This is because it was before most people were educated enough to read, let alone to exercise their right to vote. Today, however, it makes no sense, the vast majority of people are smart enough to read, and most can be trusted to vote if they educate themselves properly, and this makes the Electors all irrelevant. So my confusion comes from the fact that we still have the redundancy that is the Electoral College, the Electoral College is only redundant though, it is also a violation of rights for all citizens who are eligible to vote, as they are given a smaller role in the voting process. The Electoral college doesn't have to disappear completely, but the majority take all rule for most states does, this creates states that are, figuratively, red or blue. This of course representing the two major, American, political parties; this rule that a state gives all their electoral votes to the winner of the popular vote silences those who didn't vote for the blue or red candidate depending on the state. This allows for a person to lose the popular election, but still be president, and even though I like Dubya, he should have lost in 2000. When adding all this up it becomes clear that the Electoral College needs to go, and the fact that it hasn't and it won truly confuses me.
