Assignment 11: Ellie Phillips

For the sake of Halloween, I’ll focus on material scary, so I don’t have to talk about death and question my existence. SNAKES. I hate them and wish they didn’t exist. I can’t remember if something piqued this fear or if I was just born with it. I have heard that it’s possible to be born with a fear of snakes or spiders because in ancient times they were extremely dangerous to our ancestors, so evolution has made us more weary of them even though now they are not nearly as threatening. Wherever I got this fear, I’m annoyed because if I even see a baby garden snake I’ll scream. I tell myself whenever I see a snake “the snake is just as scared of you as you are of it”. I try to calm myself down and take deep breaths, but either way I always seem to freak out. Thankfully, Lexington does not have a large snake population because I certainly have not conquered that fear yet.
