On this date: September 26th, 1789
On September 26, 1789, Thomas Jefferson was appointed 1st
U.S. Secretary of State and John Jay became 1st U.S. Chief Justice.
This was a very important event because it was the start of
the United States. Both Thomas Jefferson and John Jay had major influences on
our country. These positions helped them accomplish more and to further develop
our nation.
Thomas Jefferson had already written the Declaration of Independence
and was one of the founding members or the Democratic - Republican Party. He served
as a diplomat to France and helped the United States keep allies in its
beginning years.
John Jay was an influential man in terms of treaties (and
other things…). He was involved with both the Treaty of Paris and Jay’s Treaty.
These treaties provided incredible
benefits to the nation. One ended a war and the other helped to prevent one.
