On the 20th of July 1969, America’s Apollo 11
landed on the moon. The world watched as this moon landing was accomplished.
The space race between the Soviet Union and the United States ended. This
landing established a feeling of American dominance over rival nations and
showed technological and economical supremacy. A sense of pride grew within the
United States. But Armstrong’s famous words talk about this being a leap for
mankind, not just America. Inspiration spread around the globe to areas far
beyond the United States. A new idea had formed as people asked “If we can go
to the moon, then why can’t we…?” I cannot even begin to imagine what the people
in this photograph felt knowing their accomplishment would be forever remembered
throughout history. Those watching this scene unfold from their own homes must
have known that they were experiencing something truly unique. The moon landing
of 1969 opened mankind to a whole other world of exploration.
