Assignment 7: On This Date- Amanda Byerman

SEPTEMBER 25, 1957
Central High School Integrates

On this date in 1957, the now-famous "Little Rock Nine" ventured bravely past the schoolhouse gates of Central High. They were embraced before entering, not by loving parents wishing their children a happy and fruitful fay at school, but by over 1000 army paratroopers, wishing them a safe day at school. Every time I consider that day for those teenagers, I am simply blown away by their strength against such overwhelming and terrifying adversity. Nobody should ever have to be afraid to go to school. The below picture is one of my favorites of all time- Elizabeth Eckford, 15 year old member of the Little Rock Nine was separated from her protection and fell into a mob of angry white protestors. She, a picture of strength, spits in the face of all of the bigotry and hate that she faced. Looking at this image, you can't help but imagine how she felt. Afraid, alone, and confused, she stood. She did not cower. She did not flinch. She stood. And sometimes, simply standing is the bravest thing you can do.
