Saurav Khadka- Assignment 16

Why must we always seek to make pure things impure? Why don’t we ever seek purity? Throughout human history, we have sought progress. We have sought progress, yet we haven’t had a clear definition of what progress is. And sometimes, we take this idea of progress and while attempting to help ourselves, we do the very opposite. Looking at issues such as climate change, GMOs, and fertility, this notion of progress has in fact set humanity back rather than drive us forward.
If there was an issue that dominates today’s world like no other, it is the issue of climate change. In fact, the 2015 United Nations General Assembly was wholly dedicated to the issue of climate change. In an effort to become more industrialized, humans started using fossil fuels. This led to the burning of these resources, causing the rise of pollution at a scale never seen before. So while the likes of Rockefeller and Saudis thank the heavens everyday for this, humanity in the end will not. We musn’t let our inability to see past the comforts of today, destroy the future of tommororw.
Secondly, the issue of GMOs. And this one, frankly, I don’t understand. There have been countless studies done to show the harmful effects of GMOs, yet the United States continuously looks at this and doesn’t crack down on it. According to Arjun Walia in CollectiveEvolution, countries ranging from Japan to the European Union all have different levels of bans and limitations on GMOs, yet the United States doesn’t. This is not only surprising but disturbing as well because of the negative effects associated with them. Detriments range from birth defects to more serious impacts. In an attempt to make food more accessible and better suited to meet the demands of today, we started genetically modifying plants. Trying to make progress in this field, we instead regressed.
Most importantly for humanity, and every species, is the ability to produce offsprings. In todays world, infertility among humans are at record highs, which bodes poorly from an evolutionary standpoint. Dr. Megan heimer, an expwert on the field, has deemed almost all the casues of infertility among both men and women to be unnatural causes. Our reliance on modern inventions and technology on fields such as sex and human development have caused us to not consistently hold our given duty to foster an offspring in order to continue the species’ survival.

The movie title Back to the Future held true more than one meaning. In our attempt to drive the development and success of our society, we have sought progress in areas where they should not be so. These areas have helped cause dire problems in today’s world such as climate change, GMOs, and infertility. These all show the flaws of looking for progress where one shouldn’t expect it.
