Assignment 16 - Grace Bond

We live in a world where being vegan is a joke: something to laugh and forget about. Vegans won’t stop talking about being vegan and their friends won’t stop telling them they’re annoying for it. But why? You don’t brush off the idea of being vegan because you’ve researched it on end trying to find its pros and cons, you brush it off because it doesn’t sound like it tastes good. I’m sorry, since when does mistreated animal carcass sound appetizing to one of the most compassionate species in the world? By eating those animals, we are mistreating ourselves.
I’m sure a lot of you have heard that drinking milk gives you strong bones. Surprise! Milk is one of the worst products to ever consume as far as bone strength goes. Dr. Amy Lanau with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington, D.C. concluded from one of her studies that “The countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis are the ones where people drink the most milk and have the most calcium in their diets. The connection between calcium consumption and bone health is actually very weak, and the connection between dairy consumption and bone health is almost nonexistent.” Cow’s milk is designed for calves, not humans, and is very acidic. All of the calcium in our bones is used to fight off the acid from the milk, leaving the milk completely useless for something that is supposedly the best source of calcium you can buy. And the worst, most disgusting myth of all is that meat is the best source of protein. Meat is the leading cause of the development of heart disease in America, which is the leading cause of death in America. The China Study, known as the most comprehensive study of dietary nutrition in the world to date, concluded that over 70% of clogged arteries could be fixed by simply eliminating all animal products from the diet. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn,  one of the main authors of the book on the study, has completely reversed dozens of cases of cardiovascular disease by “prescribing” them with a vegan diet. The China Study was a research study done over several years in several rural counties of China and on thousands of people. They used these areas because they had not been subjected to the huge industrialization of animal products and could easily transition to the plant –based diets. At the end, the researchers combined hundreds of thousands of statistics to conclude that a plant-based diet had only positive effects on long term health, most of them significant. These were people that already had less animal product intake than the average American and still saw huge benefits.
Now, what about cancer?  The Pritikin Longevity Center, an institute known for its research on diets and their long term effects, compared cancer cell growth in the blood of those with a Standard American Diet and those with a vegan diet. They took the blood of hundreds of people considered to have a standard diet, including several servings of meat and dairy each week, and put them in petri dishes with cancer cells to record their growth. Of course it slightly inhibited cancer growth, but only 9% of the cells were completely destroyed. The exact same process was used with the blood of the same people, except this time they had completely eliminated animal products from their diet for a year. The results showed that a vegan diet reduced cancer growth by nearly 8 times as much as the standard American diet, at 70% of the cells being completely destroyed and most others shrinking significantly.
To put all of this into perspective, the two leading causes of death in The United States last year were cardiovascular disease and cancer. This means that the two main health problems in this country are also the two things most prevented by a plant-based diet. There are so many stories of people going from 12 pills and an injection each day to nothing, just because they stopped poisoning their bodies with animal products. Of course it saves animals. But it saves us too. These problems haunt our country and all of our lives, yet we ignore the solution that is right in front of our faces. You are living on tortured flesh, so don’t let that tortured flesh become your own.
