Assignment 20- Daryn Smith
How to celebrate Shabbat
Shabbat begins Friday at sunset and ends Saturday at sunset. Friday night, pro Shabbat-observers have a delicious home-cooked meal, the last warm one they will have until the next night. It includes a delicious braided bread called challah and wine or grape juice. On Friday night you light two candles and say the blessings for that and the blessings over the wine/grape juice and bread to welcome the sabbath. Then, until sunset on Saturday, you aren't supposed to do any work or turn any lights off or on, as it is the day of rest. I typically am not this observant and tend to use lights and my phone during the day, but I know plenty of people who follow every rule. If you want to have an extra fun Shabbat, you can walk to a friend's house and have a nice heart-to-heart conversation. Saturday night, you end the Sabbath with a service/ceremony type thing called Havdalah that involves smelling spices, drinking wine, and lighting a braided candle. The best shabbat-observers do this at a YJ camp with their friends because YJ does it the best and makes it seem like a cult gathering. After Havdalah, Shabbat is over until the next Friday when you get to do it all over again!
