The best piece of advice I have ever received is a cliché,
but a powerful one at that. Throughout my whole life I have heard people
telling me to only worry about myself and not what others think of me. It was
about 14.5 years before I really took that advice seriously at all. It’s easy
to hear that and believe that that’s what you’re doing, even when it’s not.
Dressing nicely every day can be for
you, but often isn’t. If you’ve ever thought “What would _________ think of
this?” and it actually changes your opinion of the outfit, you’re not doing it
for you. You’re doing it for them. The day I started wearing what was
comfortable and what I was happy with was the day my life became happier. I
know that dressing nicely can sometimes put me in a great mood, but I also know
how much I value comfort in my outfits. The clothing example is just a small
piece of this lifestyle, however. Between freshman and sophomore year, I
basically became a different person. I was so fragile and susceptible to others’
opinions, and now I know that the only person whose opinion matters is me. It
is so relieving to not have to worry about others constantly and it is what has
made me a happier person.
