Assignment 17: Ben Schaeffer
For this assignment, I picked a universally known and critically acclaimed director, Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino has directed nine movies, all well known and somewhat similar in style. The two I specifically watched for this assignment were "Inglorious Basterds" and "Django Unchained." Both these movies take place in the past, in significant periods of history. "Django Unchained" in the Antebellum South and "Inglorious Basterds" in World War II plagued Europe. I won't get too much into the plot of both; however, I will say I noticed how he demonstrated a sort of dark twisted humor in the two. For example, in "Inglorious Basterds," Lieutenant Raine carves a swastika on Colonel Hans Landa's forehead. In Django, the sassy former slave and the man who frees him, played by Christopher Waltz, make witty remarks when faced with peril such as having a plethora of rifles pointing at them following a murder. Furthermore, Tarantino displays huge quantities of blood in the fight seasons. The gore reaches a point of almost unnecessary mean. This glorification of war is the topic that seemed to span across both films, that at least a boy who isn't super into the logistics behind movies could pick up on.
