Caitlin Southworth - For the Love and Hate of Television

Television provides an outlet for what ifs and possibilities for our world, which is why I think it is so popular. Like books, many shows portray life in a new or different way from our current society. This intrigues many people, including myself. Television offers something many thing don’t- an escape from reality- either in post apocalyptic worlds, to other planets entirely, and everything in between. It is enjoyable to watch something that is unknown to us, that each writer, director and actor portrays differently. But it’s more than just the setting that makes a show enjoyable, the plot has to be good enough to keep your attention, and if not, then at least the characters have to be good/ the actor’s performance is good enough to carry the show. If a show has no good characters (well developed or acting skill) then I find the show a tad unbearable. I think good acting is a major factor in determining if a show is good or not, that is why the good actors are paid a ton, right? A good actor can carry a bad or decent show, and a bad actor can ruin a decent or good show. But in the the end, there is no clear distinction of a good or bad show, it simply comes down to personal preference, and the shows that people find enjoyable, are going to be the ones they watch, obviously.
