Television has become one of the primary sources of entertainment in America. People spend hours upon hours watching their favorite shows or sports teams each day. With the many networks that exist, nearly everyone can find something that they are interested in. Because it draws in such a large, diverse crowd, it has become to integral into everyday lives of people across America and other parts of the world.
I personally do not watch a great deal of television, as I prefer Netflix shows that have already ended and that I can watch at the rate I please. But for many other people, their favorite tv show provides something to look forward to each week. When I do watch tv, I enjoy Grey's Anatomy, Downton Abbey, and The Daily Show. I am not a fan of cooking shows (because they make me too hungry). I don't watch television regularly not because I don't like it, but because it doesn't fit with my lifestyle. I do, however, think it is cool that it has provided a way for many actors, actresses, and other celebrities to become famous.
TV has successfully entertained people for years now, and because of this, advertisers have been able to spread word about their company, restaurant, or cause quite effectively. Massive parts of political campaigns take place on television. Since so many people are watching, it is a great way to spread the word. Despite the prevalence of advertisements on tv, I don't think that they are the main effect television has had on society. More importantly, television involves Americans into each others' lives and makes ordinary people into celebrities, subsequently entertaining everyone else at home.
While it takes up a lot of many Americans' time, it isn't necessarily a bad thing for society.
