National Geographic is and continues to be a major contributor to today's news and media, and its magazine covers fall nothing short of spectacular. Published continuously since its first issue in 1888, The National Geographic is a world leader in geography, cartography and exploration. Known as one of the most impactful photographs in the world, National Geographic released, three decades ago, Steve McCurry's "Afghan Girl".
The cover highlights Sharbat Gula, the Afghan girl with the piercing green eyes, at Nasir Bagh refugee camp in Pakistan. But it is not simply the pigment of her eyes, "I knew she had an incredible look, a penetrating gaze" McCurry recalls in a 2015 interview with CNN. The picture became the most successful shot in its distinguished history. Taken in December 1984, it was published the following year, striking the public instantly. This single photo was able to spark ambition in people across the world, open their eyes to the danger that exists in Afghanistan, and increase volunteers in Afghanistan's refugee camps. The courage and inspiration offered by this photo is what made it so famous.
