Blog 14- Safal Dumre

Thanksgiving has been very symbolic to my family.  My family can actually celebrate it to its full extent since Thanksgiving is one of the few holidays that doesn’t have a religious connection to it. It was a holiday which symbolized our family’s diffusion in American culture. My mom makes the standard thanksgiving stuff like a turkey, sweet potatoes, corn etc.… But she also makes special Nepali dishes like Momo, samosas, roti. When we first came to America, a foreign land where almost everything was different from Nepal, celebrating Thanksgiving was one of the things that made it feel like we were a part of something. We were normal at a time when everything else was abnormal. That feeling of inclusion in the culture of this country meant a lot to us back then. Now it has always been a tradition. The one difference is that most of our family is back in Nepal so it’s not practical to fly half way around the world for a holiday dedicated to a specific country. But we invite the family that we do have here and it is still a wonderful time.
