While I have many people who try to advise me, whether asked
to or not, there are very few individuals whose advise I respect. One
individual who often offers sound advice is my mom. She has often told me to
treat others with respect, even if you do not like them or you disagree with
them, yet still maintain your stance. This advice has come in handy numerous
times. I feel that respect is rarely given anymore, but I feel that it is
integral to maintaining working relationships and achieving success in life.
While some may say “why should I give my respect right away to someone I don’t
know or to someone just because they are older than me,” I believe that
everyone deserves respect, no matter the circumstances. How can you expect to
maintain decorum and learn from others without it? Everyone is a human being
and should be treated as such. We all obtain the capacity to feel. Following
this advice has greatly affected me, as I try to follow it in all of my
interactions. I truly believe it has bettered my relationships and allowed
people to have more empathy for me when I am struggling. Often teachers and
employers are more willing to be understanding towards someone who has always
shown them respect than to someone who is constantly rude and disrespectful. I
also feel that it is extremely valuable in friendships and romantic
relationships. How can you be friends with someone or have a relationship if
you do not treat them with the same respect that you wish to have? My mother’s
advice has, in my opinion, aided me in my quest to becoming a better person. I
hope to always follow this advice, even when it is most difficult to do so.
